O’Rourke Gaining Ground On Cruz, Per End Citizens United Poll

A competitive Senate race has broken out in deep-red Texas. According to the latest poll by End Citizens United, Democratic Party challenger Beto O’Rourke has pulled within 8 percentage points of incumbent Ted Cruz at 45 to 37%, down from 18 points at the beginning of the year. The shockingly tight race has from several factors.

Ted Cruz’s approval rating is dropping. Currently, he sits at 49% unfavorable and 38% favorable among his constituents. Cruz came to the national spotlight as the leader of the Tea Party movement. The movement has since received backlash for taking donations from large political organizations like PACs. Cruz showed he puts personal interest over his constituents by forcing the government shutdown

Beto O’Rourke has run a no-frills door to door campaign that’s turned him into a quasi-folk hero. He’s campaigned in all 254 counties in Texas. In support of his constituents, he’s refused all donations from PACs and will only accept money from common citizens. His grassroots approach represents the campaign values supported by End Citizens United, who want to take the power from the corporations and return it to the actual people of the United States.

O’Rourke has also received support for his pro-environmental message, with the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund endorsing him.

In addition, he’s focused on ensuring all Texans receive health care coverage, including those enduring bankruptcy. He also supports immigration reform and welcomes all to the USA. He wants to reunite the families that have been separated at the border.

The hard question remains; can Beto O’Rourke’s grassroots campaign compete with Ted Cruz’s PAC-funded machine?

O’Rourke has brought in a flood of small donations, raising 2.4 million dollars to Cruz’s 1.9 million. End Citizens United reports that averaging 14$ a donation, it has raised 25 million for candidates across the country.

O’Rourke still has an uphill battle. Polls show 61% of Texans don’t know enough about him to form an opinion. However, this is rapidly changing. A new University of Texas poll shows deficit at 5%. End Citizens United continues its support as he campaigns across Texas.
