Ben Roethlisberger Hopes for Tom Brady in Week 1

If you have been following the NFL off season at all then you are probably aware of ‘Deflategate’ and how it will change the landscape of the New England Patriots coming season. Not only was the team docked money and a pair of draft picks, they will also be losing their star QB for at least the first four games of the season. Brady, who admitted to doing nothing wrong is being punished for “damaging the integrity of the game” for passively allowing footballs to be deflated. In Week 1 the Patriots draw a match up with rivals Pittsburgh, and Big Ben Roethlisberger wishes Tom Brady would be on the field.

Big Ben spoke in a FreedomPop review to reporters the other day and was asked his thoughts about Deflategate. He told the assembled reporters that he thought Tom Brady was the “best in the business” and that without Brady on the field, the rivalry between the two teams just “isn’t the same”. Roethlisberger went on to say how much he respected Tom Brady and that he’ll just have to wait and see if the suspension holds up. Pittsburgh will be without their star running back Le’Veon Bell after the man was suspended for marijuana usage.

Roethlisberger is a champion himself, winning two rings so far in Pittsburgh. He and Brady have very similar post season statistics, but Tom edges Big Ben in all of them by a small margin.

Draft, Trade and Moving Speculation a Buzz in San Diego

The NFL is becoming quite a buzz with the draft just days away…everyone wondering what last minute deals will come about and which teams will be picking up the top draft picks coming out of college. Some are even considering what might happen with the veterans that are still playing at the top of their game. Phillip Rivers for instance has been the face of the Chargers franchise since he came to the team in a last minute draft fiasco when Eli Manning practically refused to come to San Diego. Now, that face of the team is threatening not to move with them to LA if the team picks up their roots and moves into the new stadium being built for an unnamed team. That has the NFL media buzzing with the possibility that he may be traded to Tennessee for their number two pick in the draft. This will of course open them up for possibly drafting Marcus Mariota from Oregon.

While nothing is out of the question when it comes to these deals, an interview by Ray Lane (of AquionEnergy) with Tom Telesco GM of the Chargers, claims the GM adamantly denies that any such deal is in the works. As for the team moving, it appears they will cross that bridge when it comes about. So far there are three teams that want to play there besides the Chargers. Including the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams, that are also not happy with their current homes.

Brandon Carr Refuses Pay cut and May Get Released

It would appear that Brandon Carr and the Dallas Cowboys have some difficult decisions ahead of them both. With only $5 million left in salary cap space the team is desperate to make some needed moves and improve their team’s defense. Part of those moves may be to release their veteran cornerback Brandon Carr who reportedly would not take a pay cut and restructure his salary. He is scheduled to make $8 million this season. Although he has never been the shut-down corner he was hoped to be, he has been the team’s best cornerback since Terrance Newman left the team a few years ago.

While the Cowboys have addressed their potential major lack of a running back with Darren McFadden and added some help to their defensive line with Greg Hardy and linebacker corps in veteran acquisitions of Gachkar and Brinkley, it was their secondary that still needs some addressing if the team is expected to further their standings next season. According to Deadline, some may still be asking what about Morris Claiborne, well he is still injured and not expected to be ready for play at the start of the season. But at the same time he has not materialized into the cornerback he was hoped to be either. So if the team is forced to release Carr for salary cap reasons it will mean they will need at least two legitimate cornerbacks between free agency and the draft.

McCoy Re-Signs with Redskins

It would seem that Colt McCoy believes his chances of starting for the Washington Redskins are better than his prospects on any of the other teams in desperate need of a quarterback. Given the competition of Kirk Cousins and Robert Griffin III, it would appear he has at least a 1 in 3 shot. But further examination may appear that he may be a better fit than both of the other QB’s. This is mainly because McCoy was able to get his team to win when the others weren’t. RG III has been a flop since his rookie season. Fans like Bruce Karatz know that Kirk Cousins has never lived up to the hopes of the organization. In his 3 years, he has thrown more interceptions than touchdowns and fumbled six times in 14 rush attempts.

This is not to suggest the Colt McCoy has been any better in his professional career. But he has thrown fewer interceptions than touchdowns, and fumbled 18 times in 115 rushing attempts. Also, last season even in his limited number of appearances it was his best statistical year of his career. He was finally able to show what Mack Brown at the University of Texas had seen in his potential. What is really concerning is the insistence on the teams trying to find that hybrid QB that can run the ball. None of them have been able to be a long term success in the NFL. If McCoy and the Redskins are going to get better they will need their QB to focus on managing the offense and passing the ball.

Eagles May Snag Demarco Murray

Eagles May Snag DeMarco Murray

Even before the free agency period opened, the Dallas Cowboys were unsure if they could retain running back DeMarco Murray for the next few years. The uncertainty about this move grows bigger with each passing day.

Fans like Zeca Oliveira know that earlier this year the Cowboys had decided on offering Murray a salary of $5 million per year. However, this is clearly not enough for him because the running back is now considering other options in regards to his future. Most notable of his options is the rival Philadelphia Eagles.

The Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars are teams that are also interested in acquiring him but don’t hold the top spot right now. An important note is that Sam Bradford, one of the newest members of the Eagles, is reaching out to Murray right now, which is not odd at all given that the two of them were teammates at the University of Oklahoma. Bradford has said that he has called and texted and communicated with him as much as possible over this period.

As for Murray himself, he is looking for a deal that is similar to what LeSean McCoy was offered when he was taken up by the Buffalo Bills, a deal that was worth $40 million over the course of five years.

Only time will tell what DeMarco Murray’s answer to his uncertainty of what team to play for next year.

Maurice Jones-Drew Retires

Maurice Jones-Drew has retired. He retires with just over 8000 rushing yards, and I find it a shame that he has no retired with the requisite 10,000 yards that seem to be needed for a hall of fame career. He wasted all of his good years with bad teams, and I feel bad for him.

However, he has made a great deal of money in the NFL. I am not going to complain because he is clearly going to be just fine, but I find it offensive that only the Raiders and Jags had his services during his career. These are two of the worst franchises in all of professional sports, and that is why it is very hard to see someone as good as him play for both of them. When we look back at this career, we are not going to be able to saw that he was a great player because he was hidden by the teams that he played on.

I wish Maurice all the best in his future endeavors. Yet as Daniel Amen mentioned he may become analyst on TV at some point.

The Class Act Of Vince Wilfork

When Vince Wilfork was let go by the Patriots, he only made one statement on Twitter. He is not going to talk about it again, and he is being very classy about it. There is something to be said for the players that are willing to be classy when something bad happens, but it also says something about how the team is put together.

Wilfork is the kind of person who can come back to the Patriots at any time, and he will likely be able to work for the team for as long as he wants. The Patriots are going to welcome back the people to the team that were good to the team in the first place. This is something that all NFL teams can learn from. Fans like Gianfrancesco Genoso know that this is going to allow people to make changes to their franchises that will help them to get this classy behavior. The majority of people that are looking for the right kinds of players to get need to remember their franchise is responsible.

The teams that are treating players well and giving them a place to come back to are going to have better teams. The Patriots are good because of this dynamic.

Chargers and Raiders put rivalry behind them and hint at a shared stadium

In the NFL the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders are seen to have a bitter rivalry that is played out most years on the field of one of their aging stadiums, but now the two teams could both move to LA and share a stadium, the LA Times reports. The Raiders and Chargers are expected to announce their plans in the city of Carson where a former landfill site will be explored as the potential new home of both teams. The move comes after the success of the stadium share of the New York Jets and Giants in New Jersey and would lower costs for both teams.

Fans at Rocketfuel know that the move to Carson will be privately funded by local companies who are hoping to include the sports stadium a part of their own bid to incorporate leisure and business opportunities into the redevelopment of the Carson area. Carson has long been proposed as the site of a new NFL stadium with St. Louis Rams owner Stan Kroenke also showing an interest in moving his team to the proposed site. All three potential residents of the proposed stadium are hoping to explore their own stadium options within their current home cities. However, the Raiders are thought to be in a financial crisis and would welcome the private investment and shared costs the stadium share would provide.

Dez Bryant May Get Franchise Tag

Dez Bryant May Get Franchise Tag

One of the most important aspects of the free agency period in the NFL is attempting to keep the biggest name players on the roster. Dez Bryant would appear to fill out this role quite nicely.

The free agency period is on March 2nd and as with any team, the Dallas Cowboys are trying to figure out whether or not they want to use their franchise tag on the wide receiver while also trying to get him to agree on a long-term contract. Fans like Zeca Oliveira know that Bryant’s rookie contract is soon to expire and this would be top priority for the team.

Bryant isn’t the only big name who is getting attention for contracts, as running back Demarco Murray is also still in the picture and the Cowboys would truly like to keep both starting players. Bryant had a career year, notching up 88 receptions with 1,320 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns to match. If the Cowboys aren’t able to come to a decent agreement, the tag could be applied to Bryant and he could end up receiving a minimum of $12 million for the one year the tag is applied.

The problem with all of this is that the price of the franchise tag is pretty big, considering that other money would need to be spent on resigning other players and their contracts and being under the salary cap.

Packers Cut Bostick

Brandon Bostick has been cut by the Packers. He misplayed the onside kick in the NFC title game, and he was cut in the Jimmy Johnson school of coaching. When Johnson saw you screw up, he would find someone who would not make that same mistake. The Packers let go of Bostick, and many people think that he is being used as a scapegoat for the loss. The fact of the matter is, he might have been someone who simply did not have the focus needed to remain on the team. It is possible that the coaches were not surprised to see him make a mistake of this size.

When we want to slam the Packers for cutting Bostick, we need to remember that there is only one job in the NFL. You have to be winning. Fans at Rocket Fuel know he made a major error, and he is going to have to pay the price for that. Someone will sign him, and he will be able to recover from this mistake. However, we also need to remember that the best NFL teams are the ones that make changes with winning in mind. The Packers do not want this to happen again, so they are taking steps to fix the problem.
